It was born during the Austrian domination in Lombardy-Veneto at the beginning of the 19th century.
The Habsburg soldiers began to dilute the Venetian wines with sparkling water because they were too strong for their palate. The name derives from the German verb “spritzen” which means “to sprinkle”.
